Removal involves pulling up VERY hard. Some people will say it can't be done, but try pm'ing Mole, he's done it several time and has a good explanation of just how hard you have to pull them and why.

you are supposed to cut the collar of the bottom of the gearknob and remove the retaining clip be interesting to see it done by pulling it would save a lot of agro

He said it was easier if you have a sunroof....apparently open roof, stand on front seats, hold on tightly and give it a yank (please note I am still talking about the gearknob removal!!!). Has to be a sharp, sudden pull, not just a constant tension.

I changed the gear knob on my C70 today. Here are my tips: - Start by pulling up the gaiter from the centre console (it should just pop out) - Pull it over the gear knob as far as it will go - At this stage you should be able to see two small looking clips just under where the gear leaver finishes. Use a flat headed screw driver to lever these out of the grooves in the gear stick (not to hard as you may snap them) - Once these have been levered the gaiter should slide down the gear stick. You should now be able to see the metal of the gear stick. - At the bottom of the gear knob you will see a further 2 clips/catches. Bend/Break (depending on whether you want to reuse the knob) these off and the gear knob should pull off. - Attach the new gear knob, click in to place, slide gaiter up to base and thats about it. Should take about 30 mins (if that)

I've changed mine twice. Very, very hard to get the old one off. Putting the new one on also requires bashing the top with a mallet - you won't damage anything, but cover the new shift knob with a soft cloth before you use your mallet. Also - you may loosen or damage the gear position bulb in the center console, so be prepared to possibly replace it afterwards, as well.

Grasp with both hands
Hi, Just changed mine this afternoon, Took a firm hold with both hands ( as you do! ) And exerted quick but firm pressure upwards without really pulling and off it popped! No standing on seats or cutting anything! Fitting new one ( Ripspeed chrome ball) required cutting the gear lever by about 1 and a 1/2" so that the chrome ball sat on top of the gaiter. without any of the stick showing. Enter angle grinder and a blanket to stop sparks going where they weren't wanted and now a nice chrome ball in place of old knob.
Total time including cutting lever about 15 min. |
