Speedo sensor 940 wanted

Hi there my dad has a 93/94 Wentworth 940 Turbo estate but it has developed a little niggle the speedo works on and off ,,,my dad has removed the sensor from the diff and cleaned it but it has a mind of its own,.Some times works no problem then doesnt .
Told him to clean any contacts in wiring etc ,he did say the abs light has been on for a while but the speedo was working even with the abs light on
It also comes on and off
Local garage want to charge him an arm and a leg to fit a new sensor and said this still may not cure it as they said " well it is an old car"
He is past 70 and was a lorry mechenic his whole working life and I am a motor mechanic but he stays a bit away from me so I cant just pop round
The car only goes out once a week for shopping so does very little miles but he really wants the speedo working again.
I understand there may be issues because of the abs issue but he wants to try a sensor first then take it from there .
