Default Steering wheel Click, any ideas what this is?

I have this "click", its not a loud noise and I can't hear it from outside the car, its coming from within the steering wheel column and I can feel a very slight click/tap within the steering wheel when its turned (right or left) at very low speeds.

The steering feels fine, not tight or loose, just right.

Its a single click/tap, so when it happens, it won't reoccur for maybe a few seconds even if turning.

Like it rubs against something? or there is a point in the steering when a piece of metal or hard object taps against something.

Is there anything simple I can try, to try and find out what this is?

You mean thats faulty or normal? as it has only started happening recently and in the year and a bit i've had the car i've never had this click and its annoying!

Edit: and no my indicators aren't on , so its not the noise you get when it cancels.

There's a UJ down there somewhere I think, may be that?

Also i got this from a mercedes forum

Quote:
Steering column faults appear to fall into three categories :-
1:- steering wheel can be moved slightly up and down and slightly from side to side . The fault is caused by insufficient compression on the bearing at the bottom of the jacket tube, the upper tube/sleeve through which the column runs which allows play at the steering wheel
2 Slight clicking when you turn the steering wheel left, right, this is not a problem and should not cause the car to fail in any way, including the MOT .
However it is annoying and can be over come by greasing/packing the spline which runs between the middle and lower sections of the column
.
See the information below.
I have applied heavy grease to the spline on several occasions and it cures the clicking for a while, so I'm confident that the cause of the clicking is minute movement in the spline.
The spline plays no part in the steering aspect of the car it simply allows the column to be split into two parts for removal purposes.

Does that make sense? and if so do i need to worry about any safety aspect unless it gets worse?

Edit: spoke with a garage that someone recommended and am taking it in next Tuesday for them to inspect, so will update in case someone has similar problem.
