Default A good price?

£445 for a Volvo dealer to supply and fit the Spline Sleeve kit. That's including vat.

Is that a good price?

I have no AWD, and know the most likely reason is a worn sleeve. I'm thinking of paying to get it replaced and hope that cures it!

I went in today and asked what's the best price they could do. I have a local garage that is willing to do the job, it'll probably cost around £340 but he's not done one before. And that price could very well go up if it takes him much longer than expected. Volvo are more expensive, but have the tools, the experience and know what they're doing (hopefully!)

The price is the cost of the kit at £140 and then either the job only being charged a maximum of 3 hours (they charge £100 an hour including vat!!!) or 4 hours at a reduced rate.

Would you pay that amount, without knowing it would cure the issue? My thinking is that that's the most likely reason and is cheaper to fix than the angle gear etc. If the new sleeve doesn't cure the AWD then I won't be spending more money on it.

There seems to be two issues.

My thoughts:

1. Yes. £445 seems like a very fair price for a main agent to supply and fit a spline sleeve.

2. The risk of it not fixing the problem is something else altogether, and something which you need to evaluate. Only you know your personal circumstances with regards to funds etc and your own risk profile as to whether the 'gamble' is worth it.

I would get the dealer to do it and also do a check
I had to get mine done again just before the warranty time (1 year)was up .
One of the seals started to weep therefore the job cost me nothing.
Would your indie replace and do the job again for free?
No problems since.

Yes that is an excellent price bearing in mind it is a 3 hour job ..They will have the hydraulic tool to pull the splined sleeve off and also replace the relavent seals in and around the new sleeve ... However what will you do if they have it all apart and say the angle gear shaft splines are rounded off and it needs a new angle gear as well? You have to allow for this in your budget ...IF it is needed, they won't want to leave it dismantled on a lift whilst you make up your mind ...

Thanks for the replies.

How much would an angle gear be? Any rough idea? And what are the chances Volvo will just say it needs doing to get more money?

Ive got it booked in for the 20th

absolutley zero, you are not dealing with back street garages ..

Ive got it booked in for the 20th
You need to talk about it with them , ask them what happens if the Angle gear splines are stripped too , and the cost of it if they need a new angle gear unit .

Success 😃

My car now has working AWD.

They ended up keeping it over night as it took 7 hours in the end! They apparently snapped something off while getting the sleeve off too, so had to replace that. Still only cost me the £442.99 they originally quoted so I'm happy.

They said the angle gear looked fine so only the sleeve was needed. The gamble paid off. Thank goodness.

Now, bring on the snow
