Default Initial start - up problem V70 TDI

Can anyone suggest the cause of my starting problem which is becoming more frequent. It's a 98 2.5 with the Audi diesel engine. It starts up ok, then a couple of seconds later it begins to mis-fire for 2 to 5 secs, then runs and performs ok. MPG per on board comp. is 43 - 47 average. Car starts ok when warm. On my old 240 I would go straight for the glow plugs, but with so many sensors / detectors fitted is this still an obvious first choice? Air filter is new.
Any sugestions would be appreciated befor I get the back support belt and knuckle busters out. Dave, Barnsley

hi dave
welcome to the forum. when was it serviced last , when did it have the pump timing done and have you had the codes read. cold and hot starting issues is one of the pump timing problems, check all intercooler hoses. my laptop has gone t*ts up at the mo if you have a laptop with a serial port i can read the codes for you .

Default v70 initial start problem

mike, new water pump fitted + timing belt etc 2 months ago by costly narratts dealer wakefield.this problem was just startin to show prior to the water pump failure so was not of their doing. Do all my own servicing when i can but don't have access to code reader. don't have lap-top, my comp is steam operated, brain on permanant stand-by mode. i'm a hands on maechanic. i have a local ex volvo mechanic who should have the appropriate tackle.but i think i'll check the pre heaters first, the car has done 118,000 miles and i havn't checked them for the last 38k.
thanks for your prompt reply buddy. ru still outnumbered! dave.
