Pc Christine Holyoake, from Brighton BTP, said: "We have looked into the matter, including inquiries into any fault with the sat-nav device and have come to the conclusion that there was no fault and that taking into consideration that it was dark when the incident occurred, that the woman had made a bad but honest mistake.
Most of the GPS tracking systems have people driving on the roads, taking GPS readings to track the roads, and to add new roads as and when complete.
No one in their right mind would decide to track a set of railway lines!!

Even the ordinance survey GPS maps (which you can buy) would differentiate between railways and roads..

The 52 yr old woman misinterpreted the instructions and "got into a bit of a pickle"...

Probably only had a full licence for the last six months after trying for the last thirty years...New fangled technology that caused the pickle.

If your satnav system told you to turn up a one way street going against the flow, would you do it ?
I bet you wouldn't get off with it if it was reported either...

Was it a male voice or female voice that told her to turn left?

i know the crossing as its not far from me & no way could she not realise it was a rail track, theres plenty warning with signs, barriers & lights, a picture of a train should have been a big enough clue !!

My in-laws stay on a farm, the road leading down to the farm has no lights, it's a dirt track with some very large potholes and it's just over 1/4 mile long from the main road. The road leads past the farm down a very steep muddy hill which has a long of overhanging branches from the trees, continue a bit further there is a footbridge over the burn.

There is a sign on the main road saying the road is a dead end.

Last week we had two people drive past the cars down the hill and get stuck. I had an argument with a van driver last Friday night who sat outside beeping the horn till I went out. "Move these ****ing cars" was his opening line. My satnav says it's a road so I want down.

ok satnav is good but I think a bit of common sense is required sometimes. It's not 100% accurate.

A couple of months back my Volvo RTI directed me down a narrow lane in Cumbria. Rounding a bend the road suddenly became narrower than my XC90!!! Fortunately the boundaries were hedges and not walls so with no opportunity to turn around I could only continue to the bottom of the lane where it met another (much wider) road. We then noticed that at that end of the lane there was a sign for traffic approaching from the opposite direction saying "Unsuitable for Motor Vehicles". Might have been useful if there had been one at the other end too!
(Only suffered a few light scratches in the end that polished out)
