Smile Crank locking tool for 940 B23OFT

Was hoping to buy a crank holding tool as my timing belt is due.

Fankoo!

Mines due as well, in fact the belt and tensioner have been waiting in the shed for a while now..

I haven't done a B series belt before but some tippex and a bit of care have always worked for me.

I changed the belts on my bosses V40 this week and now the 940 belt looks almost fun! Two camshafts? VVT? what's all that about?

The 940 is looks quite simple, but worried about putting to much force and doing harm to the engine.

The tool looks quite simple and cost £35 or so but thought one of you guys might have one in a box somewhere, if I manage to get one I can lend it out to you to use but you seem to know your way around Volvo's, VVTI-what a nightmare!

I checked my belt (stood for a two days) and was loose about 1/2 inch so gave me the willies, thought that tensioner was kaput. Today it was tight and re-tensioned so might be normal. The belt looks good so can wait awhile.

The B series is a non interference engine, as in the pistons and valves can't meet. So apart from leaving you stranded and the hassle of re timing it a broken cam belt is no problem. I think you'd struggle to damage it changing the belt.

Once you have marked the crank and camshafts positions then them moving isn't really an issue as you can just line your marks back up. Although yes you need to undo that crank bolt. I don't know how I'd hold these engines still. There may be a threaded hole to put a bolt in to lock the fly or cam wheel. One way is to chock the road wheels and select top gear, not tidy but it usually works.

You got me wondering now, maybe I'll change mine today.

Well is a good day and do it while we still have some sun, let me know how you get on with the wheels chocked and in gear approach. By the way is your Carrado a supercharged one?

No it's a 16v, same engine as the mk2 Golf GTI

Everyone asks excitedly if it's a VR6 or G60 and lose interest when they find it isn't.

I found a little pool of coolant sitting atop the Volvo's water pump earlier so I'm going to leave the belt change till I get one of those as well.

I just watched the video. Damn I love those early Scirrocos! They make the Corrado look like a squashed Passat. I nearly bought a 1980 Scirroco Storm a few years ago for cheap, metallic bronze with brown tinted glass and tan leather, awesome! But I was 18 and the best insurance quote I could get was nearly £2k

Think any carrado is good, the 16v were the one to have, on the gti the 16v head was a step foward in VW iconic motor so guess the same as on Carrado's. It has also reminded me of the delorean in the back to the future movies! Great little car. Hold on to it as most spend time and money on their VR6 and g60 and neglect standard ones without and rude boy mods. Keep it stock as prices are raising, can find a half decent one for less than 2k can't believe they were designed in 86-87 and on a F reg!!!
