Thanks wynnj, but the prospect of wading through that via a translator is probably more that I have time for at the moment. I've booked the car into a local generic garage next week who can at least hook up to Volvo diagnostics and will be capable of searching for air leaks. I'll stay close to them, and if it is starting to look beyond them I'll be off to the Volvo dealership when I can get an appointment.

My car is very similar age to yours and similar spec too, with just under 40K miles. Have not had this issue, but thanks for posting this. Glad I too have been on extended warranty since year 3.

Whilst you're waiting for the parts, did Volvo provide you a courtesy car?

I did not need a car as I have another vehicle.

On the MAF error saga, the local garage declared a replacement MAF was necessary (which I had already disproved), so I stopped faffing about and called Volvo assistance who arrived quickly and suspected an air leak. The car was at the dealer by lunchtime, and a couple of hours later I got a request to proceed with a replacement of leaking air hose just after the intercooler. The bill is about £450, which is painful, but confidence has been restored.
