Ok Got of the phone to VOSA.
There is no official excemption for this, it is purley a guideline. If the tester still deems it dangerous its a fail. I can appeal the decision, but would need to pay the VOSA tester an MOT fee to inspect the car. If it passes I get the money back if it doesnt I dont. The short of it in my case is I do want it fixed, because I beleive myself it is dangerous, but dont want the panic of doing a half arsed job, and paying someone else the labour charge becuase I am rushing to get it done within the period of a free re-test. I went to the garage this morning. (boss wasnt there which is typical) and left a print out of the news letter. I told one of the guys if they can fix it today then do it and pass the car, If they can not then please take into concideration the letter from vosa, give the car a pass and I will bring it back when I come off my hols. Fingers crossed I get one of the to options done.

I thought the 'normal' tyre size for 17 inch wheels was 225/45/17 - certainyl is on both of mine. Your 50 series profile will have increased the radius of the tyre so lead to more rubbing.

i used to pass every time for this problem, the plates are designed to not damage the tyre on contact and are designed as a secondry lock stop,if would be different if the tyre contacted a sharp edge that would cause cuts.
as there must be no play in the steering i would have new lock stops fitted on the wishbones and have a 4 wheel alignment carried out to see if this corrects the contact issue. |

My V70 has 18" nebulas with 235/40/18 tyres. It rubs very badly on full lock. I should probably replace the lock stops, but I'm not going to. I'd rather have the rub than lose a few vital millimetres on the appalling turning circle. I just can't imagine having it worse than it is now with new stops.
It passed the MOT earlier this year and I don't intend to still own it when the next one is due. Gary |

I have 18" nebulas, 235/40/18 tyres and sports suspension. I used to get V bad rubbing on full lock until I added 5mm spacers. All rub gone.
The details are in this forum post: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=39165 (see my post about half way down first page) including where I bought them from. They have been worth every penny and should satisfy the MOT tester as well as stopping the rubbing. HTH Dave

You'll need to inform your insurance company if you fit spacers as they are a modification.

Hi again and sorry for the late reply. (I went on my hols)
Just thought I would update as, theres nothing worse than someone taking all the advise, and then not posting the solution. Well they fixed it for me the same day. It was not what I wanted but the only option. What they did was to take the bump stops off, turn them around and pack out with a few washers. No more rubbing and a pass. I only went down this route as I need the car to go on holiday. Now I have seen how easy it is (4 bolts) I will get some new ones and fit them when I get a spare minute. Thanks for the links :-)

For those of you on 18" rims with 235/40/18 tyres...
Consider fitting 225/40/18. I found the 225's were significantly cheaper than 235's and cured any rubbing issues (my main concern). Also if your upgrading from 17's to 18's the rolling radius of a 225/40/18 is almost exactly the same as a 225/45/17 (25.1" -v- 25.0"). The rolling radius of a 235/40/18 @ 25.4" is greater again. The tyres look exactly the same - I would say it's impossible to tell the difference visually. Before anyone asks, my Insurance Co. didn't have an issue!
