Latest update. Insurance company now involved and their expert (I use the term loosly!) examined the car yesterday. Not much help! Says I have to take the car to a suitable garage (not necessarily Volvo) for a complete examination at my cost to determine the fault. Volvo still insist that the piston rings have gone even though they have done no compression or cylinder leakage tests. The symptoms now are a lot (but not excessive) vapour coming out of the filler cap. The engine starts easily but the pressure in the system either blows the crankcase vent pipe off the valve at the front of the block or it splits the valve (which appears to be a click fit). Is this the pcv valve and would a blockage of this cause the symptoms? I've read somewhere else that the pcv valve should be replaced at 100k miles. Is this so? Mine never had even though it's been regularly serviced.
