I think we may be talking about different red 240 saloons at the mo Luke, my post above referred to this one:

... but I think you may mean this one:

I know, both red 1980s 240 saloons, both been on sale for ages, both from dealers (maybe dodgy ones), both with huge gaps in their provenance, both not exactly as depicted.

More off topic? Nice low mileage CVT 340 in Scotland.

Always wanted to try the 80+mph in reverse these cars were supposedly capable of...

Is the 340CVT even capable of 80+mph going forwards? Drove a 1.4 5-speed manual 30+ years ago, low mileage and relatively new, would barely struggle to 60mph!

As for doing 80+mph in reverse, no thanks!

Bad enough driving a spiritied fork lift truck (rear wheel steering, effectively what a 340 in reverse would be) and trying to turn!

Would have to be a very long, very straight test track before you got me doing that!

That said, i have managed about 50-55mph in reverse in the 760 and scared the bejesus out of my passenger at the time!

I agree "nice 340CVT" is surely an oxymoron?

Unfair, could hit an (indicated) ton in a 1.4 manual. Eventually.
Back in the days before speed cameras on every gantry.

Steering got interesting between 65-70. Sort of a four wheel tank-slapper, throttle and higher velocity sorted it...

Not unfair at all, the one i drove (Volvo main dealer maintained from new) was absolutely gutless, worse when loaded with stuff in the back! Conversely the 360GLT also on the fleet was quite a performer, no "tank-slapper" problems with that!

Sadly my finances restricted me to base model final owner cars (i.e. £100 with MOT), so the joys of redblock ownership have eluded me until recently: other volvos were always cheaper than 240s, plus ça change.
OTOH, got very good with bodgy spannering and painting, so valuable skills bought cheap...

Did always fancy an Amazon, but £2k for a decent one twenty years ago was way too much. Even nice 240s were pushing a grand, so a near endless supply of bargain basement 340s did instead.

The 360 was the car the 340 always should have been IMHO, even the 1.7 Renault engiend 340 wasn't much use except as a car park ornament and later as vengeance for an unfairly applied wheel clamp.
That said, redblock ownership need not have eluded you, when 740s were 10 a penny, you could easily have picked one up for a oncer - even a fairly decent one. My first 740GLE cost me the princely sum of £140 and everything worked on it, including the bum warmers! Had about 9 months MoT as well!

Twenty year "resting" saloon, £1.5k.

Despite the slumber, no sleeping beauty.
