Default V40 diesel 2014 won’t start after fuel filter was taken out

Hi everyone

First post here and a desperate one it is!
Just bought a V40 1.6diesel last week with 170k on the clock

Wasn’t sure when the last time fuel filter was changed and it seemed to vibrate slightly on idle so opted to have the fuel filter changed.

My partners uncle is a retired part time mechanic who said hel do it for me (oh how il live to regret this!)

He disconnected the lines and took out the filter but couldn’t undo one of the three screws on the housing unit as the thread had gone, so we decided to leave it. Connected the lines back in

Now unfortunately the car doesn’t start! Absolute nightmare

Called RAC who first tried to spray something to get it started, which did start it but cut out straight after. Then he got a hand pump device but ddnt have the right fitting for it? So my cars still unable to start.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You need a hand primer to bleed it, if you search YouTube there are some good videos on what to do. There is no need to crack any injectors off or spray any starting fluids about as this doesn’t do the engine any good and loosening injector lines won’t help in this case as you haven’t got fuel in the filter to start with which is why you need a hand primer.

Poor show by the RAC tho, any mechanic should be able to get one of these going without issue you’d think they’d keep the gear on the van there certainly common enough.

the small hand bulb primers are not great a mitty vac type pump gives much better results when priming diesel tilters /pumps.

If all else fails, get a tow start. When I first started DIY mechanics I had a similar Fuel filter disaster. Tried everything but it would not start. My Dad towed me round the block and we got it bump started.

I've got the priming off to a tee now although I still get a bit stressed doing it lol. If it's the 1.6 tdci, it's 8mm primer.

Yes the fuel needs drawing up from the tank as there is no electric pump in the tank.
Did you buy a genuine Volvo fuel filter with the Blue dot on top?
It is a special Volvo part, a high capacity filter. If you use one from other sources you will find it is very likely to cause trouble and block before it is due to be changed. which will cause you inconvenience and cost you need not have.
