For interest, we photographed a maroon 165 at Cumbers garage, near Brixham, Devon whilst it was being MoT tested, about 4 years ago. Apparently it hadn't run for some while but they got it grudgingly to the garage prior to more work. It looked fine but ran like a pig....

Converted from a 145 we understand.

Sorry. typing this in a hurry before I leave work to catch my train. Have a look on Wikipedia under Volvo 164. Apparently they build one 165 for some Volvo guy when he retired. I dunno, but check it out.

The blue car in the original post is a long-wheelbase 165; must have been converted but I'd like to see more pictures.

A friend of mine down under knows of the/a factory-built 165... built in the Volvo factory in Australia, to quote from his email:

"The factory 165 is fully verified.
The owner has the factory build sheet and it appears that it was built as a part of the original reference vehicle build in Victoria.
Volvo set up a factory in Clayton and built (CKD- Completely Knocked Down) 140's and later 240's and 740's.
The initial vehicles must have been to check quality and procedures etc (I think they all became Volvo cars for executives).
The car carries chassis number 1650000001.
It is orange/red and a manual overdrive carby engine.
It has most desirable options of the time including a rare rally instrument cluster (not GT but with the extra gauge).
The car is undergoing a full resto"

I'll ask him for some photos

Bump. Cumbers was one of my two local indy Volvo specialists when I lived with my parents. My 240 was looked after my them for over 15 years. They used to have an Amazon pick-up, and I have heard rumours about a 165. I believe they (or one of their customers) have a very nice maroon 164 which comes out for local shows.

There at least used to be a site written by a guy in the Netherlands (I think) who chopped a 164 and 145 together, and fitted a 960 drivetrain. It was painted white. Here's a picture, but I can't find the guy's site.

cheers

James

I guess luxury, top-end estates weren't in fashion when the 164 was around.

I believe the car which started this trend was the Cortina 2000 E, closely folowed by the Humber Sceptre.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Stewart.

James

Thanks for posting a big version of the photo. I've been to Techno Classica at Essen a few times, but not seen this stretch 165. (It's a FANTASTIC show, by the way).
