Dylan,

Any update on this? Keen to know, whenever you get the chance to compare.

On a different subject, if you ever decide to sell the 164 in the future, can I ask to have first refusal on it? Even though delivery could be a bit "challenging", I'd be seriously interested if the timing is right.

Cheers

John

Hi John

Sorry about the delay, every time I have the two together I don't have a camera. My phone with the decent camera broke so I'm not always armed and ready anymore. Amazing how reliant we have become on technology! Anyway, will get it done soon, promise.

As for selling her ... kind of a soft spot. Not really heading in that direction; multiply the saying "the purchase of a car is purely emotional" by one million when considering me. This can be a good and a bad thing. But you never know, I might consider it one day and I definitely think she'd be going to the right home if she was to go to you John!

Thumbs up

Hi John

Here are the comparison pics of the front bumpers as requested. The light is a little bad in one or two of them which I am sorry about. Hope this helps. Shout if you need more help.

PersonallyI recon the straight bumper looks the business!

Hi Dylan,

Many thanks. Do you still think the bumpers are the same profile? Looks very similar in the photos.

Cheers

John

PS both cars looking nice!

Yes, a friends and I have examined them closely and we recon they are the same profile. Although we are going to measure up and confirm. The only area of question is the apex.

John

Have just checked my Volvo parts books for the 140 range and the 164 (both books are dated 1972 so no huge American-spec impact-absorbing bumpers are listed).
164 front (metal section) - #1211278-5 for CH 74450-102949 ie with metal brackets attaching it to car

Sorry 'bout that - computer decided to send before I'd done mail!
Anyway
164 with shocker mounts (CH 102950 on) - 1213537-2
but
140 (all models to 1972) - 676009-4

but maybe difference is only holes for lamps.

Dylan - LOVE the colour of your 164; far better than my wishy-washy pale blue
BUT where did you get those fog-lights? All UK cars I've seen have flimsy rubber edgings to those lights, which look unfinished. I've considered fitting Rover P5B fogs to mine as they have decent chrome bezels.

John - Hope not too harsh on your bumper interchangeability!

Hi Paul,

In Europe, the 1972 164 bumper has a lower section in the middle, following the shape of the grille aparture. (Dylan's '72 South African bumper is different of course).

Do you have part numbers for the 1973 European 164 and 144 front bumpers? For that year only, both models had a straight, slim bumper with no impact struts. I suspect it might be the same part, albeit with holes drilled for the lights on the 164.

Thanks

John

Dylan,

Comparing the 73 Euro 164 with Rose... although both use a straight bumper, it's mounted 20-30mm higher up on the 73.

Those pictures also show a quite other thing - as discussed before - it's not blocked holes for headlight washers on the 164 - but as I suggested - there must be a traffic law saying that cars must have white reflexes on front in SA.. The 140 has them too, there in the grill..
