I'm always happy to be proved wrong, Classic Volvo Shop will have more info than me, but I still think there was more variation overseas than perhaps Volvo's European records show. Certainly it's more than just building up a Euro car somewhere else. E.g. The later, Southern hemisphere RHD 140/160 had RHD pattern wipers, never fitted to UK RHD cars... and here's a couple more SA 164s with that SA bumper that Volvo's records apparently don't mention... http://www.volvoclub.co.za/volvoclub...iew.cfm?id=258 http://www.volvoclub.co.za/volvoclub...iew.cfm?id=259 Cheers John |

John..
I accept the challenge! At SA Volvo Club website I also find: "Best stock 164": http://www.volvoclub.co.za/volvoclub...iew.cfm?id=190 - what appears to be a 1972: Narrow head rests, 1972 steering wheel, '72dorr handles and new steel wheels with single-screw hub cap, etc. - AND the frontbumper as we (in Europe) know 'em.. This car also have those plugged holes (?) - but that can not be from head light wipers - Is it some form of traffic-rule - a white reflex on front in SA? (Dylan?) "Best modified 164": http://www.volvoclub.co.za/volvoclub...iew.cfm?id=194 Difficult to decifre - but there's the "SA front bumper" - looking at it - it's clear that it's not alloy, but chromed.. - and there you have the RHD wiper!

Well I'm hoping that you can find out more about this "SA bumper".
Don't know why the white car doesn't have it. I believe some 164s were imported fully built, even where local manufacture existed. I read that, at one time, an overseas factory (not sure where) could only paint the solid colours, so if you ordered a metallic car it came from Sweden. But that wouldn't explain the white car's bumper... or Dylan's. The black modified car looks like a '73 like mine; smaller grille, narrow straight bumper with patterned rubber inserts (no over-riders) ...on all markets? Cheers John |

Hello everybody
Sorry about the seriously long delay on this thread! Most humble apologies! We did get the clutch replaced and sorted and she is going like a dream. Driving impressions are really positive. Lovely engine - really responsive and oh so smooth! Handling ... yes well. John, that understeery moment ... yes well. A little scary to say the least! But we'll get that cured in time to come. This past weekend saw a head gasket change and the engine is even better now! New silicone leads were installed too which made a really big difference! I've attached a few pics of the actual clutch replacement saga and the interior. Notice the difference when clean and don't worry, the carpets have been sorted out in the foot wells. Also, just to keep CVS happy there are a set of original mirrors on the car now courtesy of the invaluable services of Mr. Strangelove himself, I do thank you sir! I really want to get a comparison pic of my 144 bumper and the bumper that is on the 164 at present. I recon the one on the 164 is a 144 bumper with over riders and the indicater/park light clusters. Will post the pic soon. Anyway, hope you enjoy! BTW, thanks you JFB for the comments on the car! We do feel blessed! Dylan |

Hi Dylan,
Good to hear from you (at last!) and I'm glad you're enjoying the car. The understeer is easily banished, when you're ready to consider some mods let me know. Meanwhile, just feed in the steering gently; give her a moment to realise you want to change direction. Once she's actually turned in, then you can mash the throttle... do what you like really. (A Scandanavian Flick works well in the wet, but is somewhat unsettling for nervous passengers!) Quote:
