Ok.

What is the Cylinder Capacity (cc) of the engine on the V5C registration document?

That's a 4-cylinder VEA engine.

VEA = Volvo Engine Architecture.

It's the range of modular engines first introduced in 2013 and, I believe, first appearing in the S80 in 2014.

Some VEA engines of that vintage have been know to suffer from high oil consumption due to poor design of the oil control piston rings. Essentially, the drain holes in these rings get blocked and prevent excess engine oil on the cylinder walls from draining back into the sump prior to ignition, and this oil therefore gets burned along with diesel and air instead of returning to the oil sump.

This is not a direct indication of any engine wear, however.

Whether or not your car actually suffers from this will not be clear until you get a proper measure of things.

Worst examples can consume a litre of oil every 500 miles or less.

My V70 D4, which has done 160,000 miles, now consumes 0.5 litres every 1,500 miles. It's higher than it was and higher than I'd like but not frightening, either.

Let's see how your car does.

It might also be worth checking whether or not your S80 has any outstanding recalls.

If you check the MOT History for the car using the following link

https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history

then you can also find out whether or not any recalls are outstanding. For details of any recalls, however, you'd need to contact a Volvo dealer.

Thanks very much, I feel somewhat better now I understand whats happening. One concern remains though. As I mentioned the cylinder head was rebuilt at 30k miles due to the valves sticking, that cost over £3000, is burning engine oil likely to cause the valve seat contamination to reoccur?

I'll have to ask someone else to answer that one...

Probably grasping at straws here but assuming my problem is the blocked oil control rings does anyone know whether Terraclean could resolve this?

They just talk about intake valves and DPFs and such like. Blocked oil control rings aren't mentioned at all, so I doubt it.

Thanks again for replying. The car has now covered about 750 over the last 5 days and oil level still says Max, so maybe the consumption isnt as bad as I first thought (or maybe it just goes from Max OK to give me a half litre please) will keep checking level daily.
