D5 has the blues
Due to an ongoing illness I've not been on here in a good while so apologies in advance for the sudden thread.
I seem to have an issue with the engine on my 2002 S60 D5. All was going well the other day whilst on the motorway then when I accelerated I seemed to loose power and it sounded as if I was only running on 4 cylinders with a vibration coming from the engine. The turbo sounded fine and spooled up no problem, but when I got home and stood at idle blue smoke started to come out of the exhaust with a large cloud of it whenever I increased revs on the engine along with the judder and rough running and once again the feeling of only 4 cylinders working. All pipes are intact and the plenum and egr are clear. A new intercooler was fitted 12 months ago and hasn't split. I've fitted a new fuel and air filter just in case, but to no avail. The boost control valve is fine as is the mass air flow sensor and there is no vacuum leak. The oil seemed to have dropped upon checking, so I've topped it back up without any further noticeable loss. There is no gunge on the oil filler cap and the coolant is free of oil. She's done a 174k with a full service history, although she's due her next oil service now. Any help would be appreciated as I've checked just about everything, bar a leak back test, and unless I'm missing something glaringly obvious I'm at a total loss, and I'd really rather not think she's about to die as after 14 years I'd kind of miss the old gal. Cheers and thanks in advance |

What diagnostic equipment do you have?

How have you established that the MAF and boost valve are good and that there's no vacuum or boost leaks?

I disconnected the maf and the engine started to splutter and change note and I removed the pipe from the boost valve and popped my finger over the outlet with no noticeable change. I've probs done it all wrong mind you, it's not unknown haha, which is probs why I need more help than I realise.

If they were however at fault would it cause the engine to run rough or on 4 cylinders?

Your best bet would be for a kindly, local member who has Vida and knows how to use it to work their way through the many possibilities, most of which can't be verified easily without diagnostics of some sort.

A compression test and a leakback test would be a good start
If its running on 4 cilinders its compression loss or an injector issue The diagnostic can point out the cillinder but it can still be one of the 2 causes Last edited by 5cilinder; Jan 21st, 2017 at 02:01. |

Thanks for all your help. I will track down a friendly member with Vida and see what can be found. In the meantime I will do a leak back test and see if any injectors are at fault. What kind of results should I expect from the leak back? And if an injector fails the test would it be worth running some liqui moli through? As I have a can of it sitting here. Sorry for so many questions.

Warm engine, idling and the max value should be 40ml/min pro injector
Compressiontest isnt hard either if all injectors are leaking within tolerance Manometer is cheap and can be screwed in the glowplug hole Injectorcleaner is good for pollution, but cant heal a worn injector |
