Oil on the timing belt?
[Volvo S60 2001 2.0 T S Petrol B5204T5]
Hey, Recently, my intake cam gasket seal popped out and spilt oil everywhere. All over the timing belt and gears. I have been getting conflicting advice online about whether I need to replace the cam belt after it has been contaminated with oil. I have slightly degreased it now with a degreaser but the question still lies. I have also seen that Polyurethane belts are resistant to oil corrosion, whereas, rubber ones are not. How can I tell which material my cam belt is? Thank you |

What caused the seal to pop out? Have you checked the PCV is working correctly and not causing pressure build up? Not worth taking the risk with the cam belt, if I doubt change it

Since you've presumably already got access to the cambelt I wouldn't contemplate not changing it, and the idler and tensioner as well unless they're relatively new. A failed cambelt would almost certainly mean the repair cost would be far higher than the value of the car.

Definitely replace it.
On mine after the same problem, the PCV was perfectly, totally clear. However, there is a banjo bolt on the underneath of the manifold that provides the vacuum to the system. On the earlier cars, this is just a narrowed orifice, so under boost the crankcase is pressurised to some degree. Ok when new, but with 23 year old seals, not so good. There is an upgraded banjo bolt with a check valve in it, that I highly recommend you fit in place of the original. |
