Yes...
The gas is the refrigerant, so in your case because it was also replaced with the valve then my advice does not apply. Anyway, good luck with your search for a fix.

Whine from Air Con
Well after lots of looking and changing....
changed Alternator Pulley, Cam belt and water Pump, finally the last thing to replace was the A/C compressor itself. managed to get this done by small indi for £590. inc VAT which was covered under warranty. Now quiet as a church mouse. Thanks for everyone's help and advice |

Glad you got it sorted.
55k miles seem low to get those parts replaced, but at least you won't have to worry about them for a while, although normally it would make sense to replace the Aux belt and the idler/tensioners at the same time (only takes about 30 minute longer and cost is minimal). You can still replace the Aux belt without having to remove the timing belt, so it can be done as a separate job later on. Were the parts such as timing belt and water pump replaced at the same time as the A/C compressor because 'while we've got the car in bits, might as well replace other parts' etc.. ? Hopefully it wasn't done just as a process of eliminating the noise, as your symptoms were pointing towards the A/C pump bearings as it's the only part that stops moving the millisecond you hit the A/C switch on the dashboard. Out of curiosity, what sort of warranty do you have that covers A/C pumps ?
