It seems I didn't hit the upper section enough, went back to look at it after dinner and it was 'popped' all the way around - it lifted straight up, left the exhaust cam on the engine and picked up the inlet cam with the upper section.

There is something to be said for going away and having a cup of tea. Well done for persistence. Those days are about gone for me, i'm getting too old to do jobs that cause me to throw spanners across the lawn. Ball joints, track rod ends, lower control arms, springs and dampers are about my limit now.

I'm starting to get used to the idea of sitting in tea shops eating scones, or polishing the car within an inch of its life on a nice sunny day! Or am i just a dreamer 🤔

Yeah, for me, 10 years after a motorbike crash - I can't move alot or often - getting the front of the car up in the air can wipe out a day. Then the next day the neck/back/hip/knees are constantly saying 'nope'.

Still stuck on this silly exhaust coupling, between manifold and cat - no videos show this type - they always show the square flange type. Whoever thought it was wise to have a pair of domed bolts passing through a collar needs taking outside and punching repeatedly. It looks like you need grips to grab the bolt shanks, yet no room for the grips. I hope I can replace these with 'normal' bolts so I can get a 'goose neck' spanner on the engine side in the future.

Going to see if I can find a 'stud extractor' to fit on the bolt ends under the car - to hold the bolts still instead. There is a reason this type of coupling is not found on many cars.
