Rear seat removal
Can someone help me please by explaining how to remove the rear backrest from an estate?
The Haynes manual simply says operate the release catch and lift out, but I cannot make this do anything in any position. I have tried with 3 different cars, so I don't think there can be anything broken in the mechanism. What is the trick please? Thanks very much |

RE: Rear seat removal
Take out the seat base first. Then push the seat back forward. Don't kneel on the seat back, or else you'll be there forever. Get the biggest and meanest screwdriver you can find, and wedge it down the side of the seat, where it hinges. A bright light shone down there will help. You should be able to see and depress a metal collar, at which point the seat will pop out. Repeat for the other side, and the go out for a drink, you'll need one. Refitting is the opposite, depress the collar at the same time as pushing the stud into the hole. An assistant with patience may help.

RE: Rear seat removal
Thanks Michael - it worked!
The trick was to use a long thin screwdriver, and then lever OUTWARDS the spring-loaded mushroom shaped bolt. The second bolt is much more difficult, because swinging the first bolt clear of the slot tightens the bolt on the other side. Ideally 2 people would simultaneously retract and then extract both bolts at the same time. |

Many thanks to both of you gents - your posts were invaluable when removing the seat back from my 240 SE. Understanding the structure is much easier with a modicum of someone else's experience, especially when the Haynes manual is so little use. The car handbook doesn't mention it presumably because Volvo never thought that anyone would ever want to take it out ... and made it robustly difficult (as we'd expect!) in case anybody tried.
After struggling with it for a bit I realised I had to lift both ends more-or-less simultaneously to get it out, so made up a couple of shims to keep the bolts out; with these in place it was simple. I've put details in a post on the "Removing Rear Seat Back - (245)" thread. Best wishes, Dan C. |
