Silicon Enhancement
....no not that type!
Does anyone have any opinions on the pros and cons of Silicone v DOT brakes fluid. I have replaced and refurbished the brake system (B20 dual) and was thinking of using silicone fluid. I know the pro's - not flamable, not corrosive to bodywork and should not need replacing but I have heard there can be problems with brakes fade. Anyone on here use it and have you expirenced problems? Brian Last edited by Brian; Apr 13th, 2006 at 14:01. |

I've used slicone before and would do so again if I were replacing the entire braking system. It is a better product. Unfortunately if there is some of the old brake fluid still in the pipes/calipers/wheel cylinders it can react badly with the silicone stuff and gunge up the system - even though the makers deny this.
I've never driven my old cars hard enough to give an opinion on brake fade. |

I use my 144 every day. It had silicon fluid in when I got it and so I have used this ever since. I have done 16000 miles plus in a year and a half and never had a problem that I thought was caused by the fluid type. I have not noticed any brake fade. I don't drive it hard though. I have not had to top it up in normal use either.

Cheers Fellas
I have refurbed the BMC and had the calipers reconditioned by Big Red. There is a new wheel cylinder on the back and the lines are all new nickel copper so as I already have the silicone fluid I reckon I'll just go ahead. Thanks again Brian |
