480 Driving Light Lenses
I may be wrong, but I'm sure I read somewhere that it is possible to replace the lenses on 480 driving lights (i.e. the unit that includes the indicator and wrap around).
I'm in need of a couple for a 93 2 litre ES, as both sides have failed due to old age, cracks and brittleness. Am I barking mad & sizzling or is it indeed possible? Any pointers gratefully received. Martin

Yes in short, pretty sure these are still available from Volvo and are definatly listed by http://www.eurocarparts.com/ Select your vehicle as a 1995 480, goto Lighting, then Indicator. They are listed at £43.95 each. Or try http://nordicpartsdirect.co.uk, listed at £27.72 excl. VAT and should be clear type as they are 94 on. Best check though!

Volvo sell these, I bought some last year. That was the clear variety. Makes an enormous difference too!! If your into pampering your 480, Volvo still sell the heater control knobs which are usually pretty terrible looking nowadays if you have originals. Best purchase you can make for under a pound at the dealers!

Thanks both David and Roo - I've got 2 480s and have replaced the heater control knobs on both, which makes a massive difference to the look of the dash, I agree.
The price of the lenses seems pretty steep, but probably worth it in the long run. Thanks again for your prompt responses, which I appreciate

Its sometimes worth checking ebay for front clusters although they often tend to fetch a price close to new ones! The orange ones can usually be had for peanuts though.

If I remember rightly, raise the headlights, turn off ignition and lights ( so they stay up but batt. doesn't die ) and undo one philips screw down beside the headlamp washer jet. The day runners clip on at the sides, and I seem to remember having much success with slipping an old callcard in under the unit ( releases the unit spring ). The whole thing should then slide forward.
Just remember to make sure the philips screw is fully reseated before you switch on the ignition and the main lights slam down! As I've discovered, not doing so is a great way to knock one of the pop-ups out of alignment. I think there are in fact two screws, one at either side of the washer jets, but the one nearest the spots is obviously for them. Regards, Tony

And be sure to put in the right DRL types. Must be the 21/4watt variaty. definatly NOT the 21/5watt type. The 21/5 watt can cause all kinds of strange behaviour of the headlights as you can put them in the wrong way round and you will ruin the socket as the side pins are located different between these two. The sidepins of the 21/5 are mirrored as the 21/4 are out of alignment.
