Default Start stop symbol

2017 mk2 xc60 start stop symbol on the dash is grey with a line through it. Hand book says not available. No battery maintenance message on the dash. Running in comfort mode so should be active. Been on a couple of long runs so both battery's should be charged.
So the question is why is it not available. Thanks in advance Nick

A couple of times a year I go on holiday and the car does a few hundred miles, towards the end of the holiday stop/start begins to work. When I get home it works for a couple of days then it stops again until my next holiday. It's always been that way, I don't get any messages.

Same problem on my 2017 V60 . replaced both batteries , worked for a few days then back to square one . I think it is just a flawed system . When it did work on a trip down to Devon I counted how many times it operated , 36 times ! . Worked out that cost of the extra wear on the starter & battery far outweighed any fuel saving . And as the engine will work a bit harder after a start/stop to recharge the battery , the anti polution argument fails as well . I just live without it now .

I’ve begun to wonder if it depends of use patterns and where you live.

My stop start never works up in Scotland but does if I’ve parked and been in a city for a few days.

Otherwise it seems to work more often if I treat it to some premium diesel. Surely that can’t be related..?

Try disconnecting the 'small' battery for a couple of minutes.

There is a volt sensing module that seems to get confused so the old IT trick of turn it off and turn it back on is always worth a punt and it costs nothing.

Our S90 is faultless but our S60 was a bit reluctant and this trick always worked.
