Exclamation Difficulty Selecting Gears ?? Advice Please

I have recently purchased a previously owned V50 estate,on an 06 plate which is in very nice condition only 70,000 miles on the clock. I have been driving it for about 6 weeks now and It has developed a very annoying problem.
When I go to the car first thing in the morning I can select any gear when it is not turned on, the moment I turn on the engine it appears to lock my gearbox and no matter how hard I try, I find it difficult to select any gear. I usually have to go into reverse first and then once I have reversed about 15 feet I can generally then get 2nd gear..eventually after much giggling about I can select 1st and drive down the road.
However after about 1 mile when the car has warmed through the gear selection is almost perfect again and it drives like a dream.. please help..do I need a new clutch, gearbox etc., or is it possibly a very cheap repair, after only just purchasing the car I can't really afford a big bill.

Hi I was hoping for someone to have come across this problem before who could offer advice. I have to take the car to the garage next week to get it fixed, so any help from you would be appreciated so I can direct the mechanic to possible fault. Thanks. Looking forward to your replies.

It could be a number of things.

Selector, the clutch slave/master cylinder, the clutch drive plate. Chances are they won't know until it's taken to bits.

I had a similar problem and it was a spring on the clutch/drive plate.

If the clutch pedal pressure feels normal, it sounds as if you're getting clutch drag which could mean oil on the plate. Any noticeable oil leak ?
