Default AWD Front Transmission Noise when Cold MY2012

I thought the below may be of interest.

I own an early MY 2012 AWD built in July which has had an irrating slight mechanical whine from the Left Front Transmission area.
The noise is:-
1. Only during the initial 2 miles in the morning when cold.
2. Sounds like a NSF wheel bearing whine
3. Only between 30 & 35 mph
4. Is not dependant upon road type
5. Initially only on deacleration but over time was also when driving at constant speed per 3. above

I asked my dealer to investigate this noise at it's 3 month QAI and even left it overnight so they could trace it but their "ears" did not pick anything up.
Since then the noise has continued and got worse.
Last Friday I was passing my Volvo dealer & popped in and discussed the above with their master technician who had never heard of this problem in all his 20 years of Volvo Service. So off he went to check on the Volvo database & within 5 minutes he came back smiling with a service printout desribing my exact same symptons.
Within another 5 mins he had uploaded a software fix to both the front diff & the AWD control unit which is pretty central under the car saying that will fix it................Sure enough next day the noise has totally gone.
This fix is only for a very small No of MY2012 AWD's but there maybe some-one out there with the same symtoms that this may help.

I have now learnt that noises that I would have normally assumed to be "mechanical" are now not always what they seem & can be fixed with a simple software upload. To think when I got my 1st Car (Hillman Imp) computers & cars just did not go together...................

Thanks for an interesting post Simon.

And glad to hear that you got it fixed. That sort of problem which mechanics don't hear when you bring the car in can be maddening!

I agree with you regards mechanical noises being perhaps computerised issues..!!

I also had a Hillman Imp and the engine used to emit smoke through the back of the car really badly!!

Regards
