Default 2013 XC60 AWD thudding from rear

Afternoon everyone,

Recently purchased a 2013 XC60 D5 AWD, all going ok (ish), as with all used car buys you get to find its little foibles as you go.

One thing I'm noticing is a a thudding/thumping noise from what sounds like the rear of the car. This seems to happen at lower speeds when coming up to a roundabout, letting off and then getting back on the power as an example. I'm slightly concerned thinking it could be the diff making the noise, however thought I'd ask here in case anyone had similar issues in the past.

Thanks in advance.

Sorted this once on a V50 - it was the jack loose in the boot...

Seriously though I would check in the boot area for anything rattling about.

When the diff's go it's usually a whine and it's very rare. Under normal driving there is little to no power going to the rear (past the AOC coupling) - I would check engine mountings first.

Maybe get someone to drive you so you can sit in the rear and get a better idea which end of the car it is coming from?

I had a funny knocking noise from the rear and the car seemed a little odd but I had not been driving it much due to COVID.

Turned out to be a broken near side rear spring.

Worth a check!

Maybe have a look at the trailing arm bushes

That's definitely worth checking out as it has the potential to take the tyre out (the front springs are certainly close enough, not sure on the rear)...

That's good news and kind of puts me at ease slightly. Thanks for the notes people. Had already checked the boot, can't see anything in there knocking about. Will be time t get underneath and have a good look.
