Default Auto Wipers

Hi all
The auto wipers on our MY 2004 D5 are driving us crazy, basically just not working as they should, either wiping too much, not enough and sometimes going to full hyper speed whilst sitting stationary for no good reason.
Would i be able to disconnect the rain sensor, & would this leave me with intermittent wipes which could be manually controlled?
I think this can be done with other marques
TIA as always

Can you not just NOT switch them to auto?

Stupid question, I know, but you do know you can adjust the sensitivity of the auto wipers by rotating the intermittent wiper control?

Try cleaning the windscreen above the sensor, it might be a film of grease or dirt causing the problem.
The sensor is in the blacked out area below the rear view mirror, a good scrub with some neat screenwash on a plastic pan scrubber will make sure it is not getting false messages.

Thanks folks, the windscreen is clean and yes I know I can adjust the sensitivity, what I am saying is that it doesn't work well
Is there a way of reverting to a manually controlled intermittent set up

To elaborate on the above, I am constantly having to change the setting on the stalk due to the erratic behaviour of the wipers in steady conditions and sometimes still cannot achieve satisfactory wipe intervals either way

I am not sure about the XC90, but on the XC70 of that year, it is possible to change from auto to intermittent by switching the wipers off then immediately back on to intermittent ie from position 1 to 0 then back to 1, to return to auto do the procedure again.

Excuse butting in ... are the Auto wipers on earlier models different?, our MY09 the auto is controlled by a press switch with a LED 1/2 way down the wiper stalk (and the rotary ring to control the interval,) manual normal wipers and normal intermittent is controlled by use of the stalk and the control ring ...
