hi whilst screwing on a new gear knob i noticed the whole chrome part of the lever was rotating it doesnt appear to be a thread is this normal or does it unscrew from the section that goes into the gearbox after today i will have very limited internet access so sorry in advance if i take time to reply to any posts . al

Don't worry, that's normal - it's held by a circlip at the base. Inside there is a rubber bush - presumably to dampen out any drivetrain vibration from being passed into the gearstick.
