General: S40 average mpg and other settings

Hi, I just became a happy owner of a used s40 2.0d from 2007. I'm loving the car and it's a really nice example, but I struggle to find some settings. I'm looking for average mpg specifically. It has got buttons on left steering wheel lever, but when I press the display says 'no messages'. The wheel on the lever circles through one option for traction control only, and doesn't show anything else. Is that right? I'm not sure if there's something wrong with the car, as setting for automatically closing of the windows is on and the car doesn't do it. Do I do something wrong or is there something wrong with the car?

Some models were not fitted with this feature from the factory you need to book it into your local Volvo dealer for a software upgrade few hundred quid I think n then you will have average,instant mpg,average speed and distance untill empty worth it in my opinion happy motoring

Had this exact problem myself, can confirm what ironhead said is absolutely correct. I was quoted somewhere between £300-£350 if I recall correctly. I also think it's worth it as I'd use these figures religiously but still saving my coppers unfortunately. I had naively assumed my '09 C30 would have come with this as standard.
