Plusgas sprayed around the plugs the day before, Warm engine, well fitting quality hex socket, gentle pressure.
What are your resistance readings on each plug currently?

That's certainly where i would be starting unless of course the OP has already done so. Must admit, these glowplugs do seem to last very well in the D5.

Thanks for the replies.
I dont know the readings , not sure how to do that.

I know the plugs are on the way out as at the last service a few weeks ago they had shown up faults. The car starts "ok" most times, but when it is really cold over night it just will not catch.
I decided based on the errors at the service to purchase 5 glow plugs and change them all..

Just want to be careful in doing this to ensure I dont break one.

Never had a plug break on a D5 engine,

but i have on the 1.6d engine altho i did manage to get the broken bit out without having to take the engine to bits,

Like others say make sure engines nice and warm ie blast down motorway or something before you start

most common rail diesels will start fine without glow plugs almost regardless of temperature, they are more for emission purposes these days.

well you learn something new every day, I was not aware of that.
My S60 is only my second diesel though.

Yes, you'll be hard pushed to find a thread where a starting or running problem is fixed by new glow plugs and it's surprising (or not) how many garages still throw it up as a first suggestion.
It's always good to have them all working though and they're easy to test.
