Default Late 2021 XC40 R-Design Interior Mood Lighting

My car has the facility of interior ambient/mood lighting, with the option of different colour LEDs. These are located adjacent to the interior roof light cluster. Does anyone know under what circumstances this mood lighting operates? I know the engine needs to be running, but I can't get the LEDs to work.

Annoyingly, the technician at the main dealers sent me a video of these LEDs working, so I know that they are installed and capable of illuminating. The procedure the technician followed seems no different to what I do, but the lights don't work for me. When the technician tried with me present in the car the lights didn't work and he couldn't explain why.

Any theories?

My headlights are always on auto- so I couldn’t tell if they are linked to headlights or if there’s a separate sensor in the cabin- but sure thing they are always on when in dark/when headlights are on. I know, this doesn’t help much - but if you’re not in daylight (and your headlights are on/auto..) and mood lights don’t come on- there’s something wrong. There is intensity adjustment under car config- but that’s it.

I have at last sussed this out. The mood lights only come on when the outside ambient light levels become very low - lower than the outside light level that triggers the auto headlights. Problem solved!
