Once the car is out of warranty, I doubt whether Volvo carry any extra liability for Polestar optimisation installations. I suspect that you would have a hard time proving that Polestar blew up the engine and was therefore Volvo's liability. I also suspect that Polestar doesn't stress the engine to the point where reliability is an issue as this would increase claims during the warranty period, both original and subsequently possible Selekt second hand warranties. Police vehicles have these sort of Volvo power optimisations and there doesn't seem to be a history of failed police Volvos as far as I know.

All that I will say about Polestar is that, if you can afford it, it is a nice option to have.

I guess the theory is that if all stock vehicles were limited then reliability would be increased and so would reputation etc. If someone decides to have the performance increased from another source that isnt the main dealer, the liability is with them. I rememner having a stage 1 remap on a Passat I had years ago. Performance change was phenomenal. Lasted 6 weeks and the turbo shat itself.

In the case of polestar, I guess Volvo charge that amount to take on that liability. So maybe there is both elements at play here.
Firstly if you drive around like a madman you're going to reduce mechanical life anyway - Polestar or no Polestar; secondly Polestar is a Volvo upgrade and IMHO they are less likely to overstep the boundaries of what is sensible (for the mechanicals) than other mapping specialists who may be solely out to impress with performance figures.

If you are intending to treat the cars upgraded performance with respect I'd go for it. That's how I drive and I wouldn't be without the Polestar upgrade now.

Agreed - Polestar is a very very valuable brand nowadays, so they would be pretty dumb to sully it by giving Billy from Barnsley something that breaks his prized 2010 S60 D5

Wash your mouth out please - what do you mean you don't have an 'optimisation' box to tick on the computer?

It's not any larger mystery that Volvo sells the Polestar upgrade than that they sell different models to begin with.

That same engine has been available with 163, 181, 205, 215, 220 and 230 horsepowers in Sweden. At least, maybe I've forgot some. There were some other levels that had a simpler ECM earlier.
Since you as an afterthought can add Polestar and send a 163 hp engine to 215 hp (i.e. make a D5 of a D3) or change a 181 hp to a 220 hp (i.e. make a D4 become a newer D5), it's obvious it's the same hardware.

How much power you want is up to what you are willing to pay. Some options are different models from start, some are a Polestar install away.

It's similar to that you today, on the heavy side, can buy a Scania with the same 16-liter V8 engine with 530, 590, 660 or 770 hp. Pick your choice, pay at the register.

I’d bet a sticky bun that the release press cars were all Polestar equipped.
