Hi,

Not sure if a beemer or merc one would fit.
But then an old beemer r merc one is likely to be in the same sort of condition!!! No point fitting it anyway..

The roar costs you 3-5mpg so You really do need to love it!!
Cheaper to get a new viscous coupling and you still get some of the roar..

Des. . .

According to a Volvo engineer the choice of a mechanical fan was deliberate. When an electric fan fails, the first you will know is when you overheat, risking warping your head and an expensive repair but at the very least delaying your journey while you let the engine cool down. When the viscous coupling fails then you just get a bit more cooling, no risk of any damage to the engine or need to stop the car. Running with no fan at all is always risky unless you are sure (how?) you will not get stuck in any stop'n go traffic.
YMMV,

BTW if it is the fan making this noise then it is probably because it is hitting something, this should be relatively obvious. A failed viscous should not in itself cause any noise, AFAIK, they just get stiff all the time.
I had a noise that behaved in the same way as described, although the noise itself was different, that I fixed by swapping the gear box as I narrowed it down to the input shaft of the box.

andrew, im starting to think that it might be a G/B issue aswell, as it stops making the noise when i press the clutch (even when stationary)...ive been driving alot today so didnt get a chance to see anything in the engine bay, will have a look tomorrow

Yes, if the noise is there in neutral but goes away when you put your foot on the clutch then it must be the input shaft to the gearbox. I have heard a few stories of people driving their cars for tens of thousands of miles with a noisy gearbox so there may well be no urgency in fixing it. Keep the oil topped up and listen for it getting worse or until it drives you mad, then fix it, is what I would do.

Yes but you do have to swap some bits over - e.g. remote.
