Default Wheels / Rumbles / Bearing / Spin

Hi

Seems I’m getting a bit of a rumbling noise when I push the car a bit. It’s an automatic and the change up seems smooth enough and well timed.

My initial thought was a bearing, so jacked up each wheel and tried rocking the wheels, but they don’t have any play in them, so I may see how it goes in the next week.

However, when I spin the wheels by hand, the rear ones could be a lot smoother – it felt like there was a bit of drag; I spun them hard once but they only rotated 2 turns at the most……is this normal, or are the brakes seized a bit, or what???? Same both sides.

Then I’m thinking about fluid in the rear axle – to check level / top up, is it the square nut on the rear of the diff????

Thank for any ideas

You're not likely to be able to "spin" the rear wheels as when you turn it you'll also be turning the diff and the prop shaft plus the other wheel , in the opposite direction, if it's off the ground. You might also get some drag from the brake pads.

Thanks Derek - that makes sense, so the resistance from the prop plus the diff, plus a bit of brake drag means you can turn it but not spin it??

rear axle lube - never checked it, so wouldn't harm to - is it the square headed nut on rear of diff 'box'

thanks again

Yes the square plug is for filling and is also the level. Dip your finger in to check. Change if you've no history. SAE 80 or 90 which is also good for topping up your steering box.

Thanks Derek

I've had the car up on the ramps and checked the level of the axle fluid, all okay. To drain, I guess I've got to take the whole plate off, as I can't see a drain ****, a longer job for another day.

What my fear is, is that there is wear somewhere along the prop shaft. It's a definite vibration that comes in at around 50 mph on the flat, or it seems if the car is under strain, lots of hills where I am.

To be investigated.....never removed a prop shaft.....bit scared to be honest

another thread to follow

Thanks again

Just a thought but have you checked your wheel balancing?

Took the car to the garage; 2 out of the 3 UJs had considerable play in them; so phone call to Simon at Brookhouse - top service as always and the 3 UJs plus a central support bearing arrived the next day - may as well do them all whilst it's off...

Mechanic took 3 and half hours and it was done

problem solved, smooth drive now - all the way up to full speed

Cheers
