Default 2004 s60 T5 wont start possible fuel problem

Hi all hoping someone can shed some light on a problem I am having with my s60

Car
S60 T5 B2345T3
2004
270,000 miles

The other day whilst travelling up to Leeds (a good two and a half hour trip) I went to accelerate and there was nothing. It then spluttered and sort of kept running and back firing. I immediately got over to the hard shoulder where the car idled for about 10 seconds and died. Never to start again

The recovery guy and I tried to do a bit of fault finding and chucked a load of brake cleaner down the intake which sprung it into life but nothing after that. So we suspected it to be some kind of fueling issue. We also took it to a petrol station and chucked 20 litres in it which made no difference.

About 8 weeks prior to this I had a similar problem in which I pulled out of my driveway and it did the same. After some fault finding my mate and I pulled the pump off the tank to discover it was empty even though it said it was half full (same happened the other day). We also noticed that the fuel pump housing was cracked and leaking which I had been smelling for some weeks before. I replaced the pump brimmed it and the old girl fired up with the only issue now being that it would only show 3/4 full and never full. I figured that this was the other sensor unit and decided to replace that at another time and only ever do 200 miles before filling it up every time.

So at this point I'm a little stumped. I've checked all the fuses and they're ok. I have also checked to see if there is any fuel in the rail which there isn't. I also have the back seat off and I can't hear the pump priming (I'll check this properly later when there are two of us), the car also have a new fuel filter a few months ago.

To my mind I feel that either the new fuel pump has decided to die already or its something else like the PEM. Does anyone know if this year has a PEM as I have checked on top of the tank and can't see it.

Any help would be appreciated

Have you got a fuel pressure sensor on the end of the fuel rail? 2005 model year had them , yours may be a 2005...( mid 2004 onwards) These sensors were poor in 2005...

It was one of my first thoughts too. It just has the nipple at the end of the rail which no fuel currently comes out of. Could this be a relay issue
