Default Potholes...

Driving home last night and managed to find a large pothole to drive in. Big bang and I knew immediately something wasn't right. Complete deflation of nearside front tyre and upon removal this morning found what is in the attached pic.

Put the spacesaver on and limped into ATS Euromaster, York. Hats off to the team there - got me sorted with a new tyre - same as the damaged one and I'm glad I took out the tyre and wheel insurance when I got the car - it's nearly paid out what I paid for the policy.

It's a long time since I changed a wheel and I'm glad to say "I've still got it!'.

You were fortunate to have a space saver. Any damage to the wheel?

A few markings on the outside face of the wheel which I need to look at tomorrow. The rim seems fine.

Couple of years ago I came across a newish Porsche with a flat rear tyre. The car was partially blocking the turning I needed and the owner, in a pale coloured linen suit was pacing and talking in an animated way on his phone. I had to stop so asked him if he was OK and he said he was as he had a 'puncture rescue kit'. When I returned 20 minutes later he was still by the car, but his smart suit now had a fair amount of pink tyre goo decorating it.

what was the tyre pressure for interest?

You need at LEAST 38 psi preferably more, to prevent this kind of damage, prolong tire life and reduce fuel consumption and get some sharper handling it really does work.

I usually go for 39 all round as per the sticker on the inside of the door frame.

Checked them within the last month so it's possible they were a little lower than that.

Yeah but too much pressure leads to faster tyre wear…..

I run at 38psi. When you say 'preferably more' how much more I wonder? I'm all for squeezing a few more mpg out of it but wouldn't want to jeopardise the comfort.

39 PSI is not too much pressure, it's actually the most economical pressure according to Volvo, look at specification plate in your car.

It is underinflation which can cause increased rolling resistance, which generates more heat and accelerates the degradation of the tyre's rubber compound. That's even mentioned in Volvo's manual.

That being said, I also pressure tyres in my XC60 to the value specified as most economical by the manufacturer (39 PSI in all four). In fact, I do the same to my girlfriend's Vauxhall Mokka X with 17" tyres, where 39 PSI is also a labelled as most economical.
