I need to fit new brakes all round on my 2002 XC70 D5. Budget is tight, so i am considering fitting a patern part. - Pagid / mintex / Eicher

Has anyone fitted these to their car and found any problems?

Thanks, Matt.

Make sure that you check the price of GENUINE VOLVO first rather than assuming aftermarket will be a lot cheaper.

This week, on my 2006 S60 D5, i fitted GENUINE VOLVO front pads £37 and handbrake shoes £22.

Pagid and Mintex are very good quality so no safety issues but not enough of a saving when i priced them to warrant purchase.

If going to Volvo ASK FOR A DISCOUNT!

I patronize a reputable indy shop which specializes in Volvo, and had them replace the front pads on my base model 2004 V70 at about 45 kmi. These are OE 15" wheels and so the smallest dia rotors 286 mm (?).

I just assumed they would use Volvo parts, and so it wasn't until mid-job that I asked and they told me in mid job that they would use another brand. I was taken aback, but went along with their choice.

These pads do not contact the outer part of the rotor (disc). After a couple of thousand miles I can see an unswept rusty band of about 5 mm width on the outside of the rotor. This must reduce stopping power. Also they squeak on low energy stops. The vehicle still stops fine for me so I think I'll just live with this, but I'm not fully satisfied. I sure won't take my wife's XC90 to them for brakes .

I fitted Mintex pads and discs to my XC70 last year they are every bit as good as OE stuff. Front pads £22, discs £72 pr, rear pads £16, handbrake shoes £22 and discs £64 from my local motor factors.
Volvo stuff from Rufe may not be much more than this, but there will be quite a bit of postage to add on because of the weight.
Other makes that would be OK are Delphi, Ferodo and Brembo.
Whatever you do, do not be tempted to buy some of the chinese rubbish that is available on Ebay, brakes are life and death stuff and some of that cheap stuff is unbelievably bad.

Nor would i expect you to BUT it should never be automatically assumed that aftermarket is cheaper than Genuine Sometimes it isn't.

Fwiw, Volvo's for some reason tend to be very fussy with regards to brake components.

If you are on a budget fear not you have many options;

1) Contact "Rufe" at FRF Volvo or MRG Volvo (in our trader section) for a quotation and they are generally impressively cheap (imo).

2) Do not use 'budget brands' these will give nothing but trouble meaning you will have to replace them again doing the job twice over. (Avoiding Eicher as an example - they are cheap for a reason).

3) Eurocarparts/GSFCP do a range of brake parts, PAGID (I am fitting the entire shebang of PAGID onto the rear of the S70R tomorrow), ATE, Brembo and Mintex.

Fwiw I got PAGID rear shoes/discs/pads for £75 all in from Eurocarparts (would have used FRF Volvo but needed the items immediately on demand).
