Hi Petey,
Was it Mill Volvo that you called in Newcastle (That's now a Stoneacre)? They sell parts/lubricants at trade price. Maybe that's why you got it for that price (if that was the garage you rang). Have a good holiday! Off anywhere nice?

Yes, used that shop on the odd occasion. That's what I'm thinking. Might give them a quick ring tomorrow and find out.

Oil & Filter Change
Not posted anything for a couple of weeks or so as I've been on holiday/honeymoon.
What an amazing time we had on the cruise. I'll post some pictures of that tomorrow. Just a quick one now before I have to go out. Today was oil and filter change day. I was presented with this when I came back from Norway In car time, the service was due in just under a month and just under 6,000 miles As previously posted, I'd already got the oil and the filter was delivered the day after I got home New O-rings included, which is a bonus. But I feel is standard with this filter type as the Bosch one I got the last time I changed the oil and filter also came with new O-rings. Taking my Mam out this afternoon, so went down first thing so I could change the oil. Ramps and wood assists out and the car was driven up Having the 18's on has actually raised the car a little bit so I managed to get it higher up the ramps, which helped no end. New filter and new sump plug washers at the ready Sump plug removed (17mm socket) and new washer put on Oil dumped into bucket Again, really black, which I find strange for a petrol car. I changed it about 6k miles ago as well. Maybe it's down to the thin 0w20 oil and/or the high compression engine or the fact it's turbo'd. The last petrol car I had wasn't a turbo and changing the oil every 6k in that, it was nearly as clean as the fresh oil that replaced it. Then it was on to getting the filter out. 6mm hex socket to first remove the little drain plug Then one of those big multi-sided sockets to remove the actual filter and its housing. A few comparison shots Pretty much exactly the same. Just a slight difference between the 2 of them in that last picture. And that was that. Undertray put back on, car backed off the ramps and fresh oil put in. Last time I put 5.7 litres in and the gauge marked it right to the top of the level, just before it would say it was overfilled. This time I decided to stick 5.6 litres in. I haven't driven it yet, so will check the reading after I take Mam somewhere this afternoon. I'm contemplating doing the spark plugs again, they were last changed at this time After doing a bit of research, it seems that they are usually due to be changed after 2/3 years or 30,000 miles???!!!?? Some comments on the V40 group said they hadn't yet changed them on a 2014 80-odd thousand mile V40, which to me is nuts. I get OE Volvo plugs, which aren't cheap, but I want to make sure they're the correct ones. I know I could look at Denso, NGK or Bosch, but Volvo!!!! I don't have any running issues whatsoever, so think I might leave them for a little bit longer. Maybe till the next spring or something?? Whilst I was waiting for all the oil to drain out, I also did another little thing to the car. I'll update on that tomorrow after I've given her a wash.

Good idea about the stops, I'll get something screwed onto them. I must've been in and out the car about 5 times making sure I wasn't too far up.....

Welcome back Petey!
There's already "stops" on those ramps. Look where the front of the wheels are - The protruding orange metal, which happens to be the highest point are the stops. You don't need to screw anything to the timber. All you need is a shorter length and place it at the lowest point of the ramp on either side, allowing a bit of a 'run up' and drive up on that. Like you have done in essence, but much shorter pieces. Then use the existing stops on the ramps. Good work on the oil change. I'd leave those spark plugs for a good while yet. You've done around 12k since your last service, so that means another 2 years before they need to be changed. Get your money's worth out of them! The oil looks dark, but I wouldn't worry. It shows that its doing its job, if anything. Although, I understand it may not look that way! Its collecting the carbon and other contaminants, which turns it that colour. Modern 0w20 oil could have a lot to do with it turning darker quick too.

Yes, I know the metal ramps have stops on them, but when I put the wood extensions further down, the car isn't very high and makes wording underneath it a little awkward. But, yeah, I get what you mean. Due to the splitter, I need the longer run-up though. From what I've found and what Simmy said, they should be good for 30k miles. Just feels very strange to me to keep them in for that long. Good shout on the why the oil is black. Hopefully it'll clear up a bit the more frequently I change it.

Off Topic Cruise Pictures
Slightly off topic post.
As promised, a few pictures from the cruise I went on last week to Norway. We went with P&O Cruises and the ship in question was Leaving from Southampton. We drove down in the wifes Hyundai i10, 2008 and it did extremely well. Didn't miss a beat and we had no issue whatsoever all the way there and back. Our cabin was located in the middle of the ship and on Deck 12 Now for a few random pictures of stuff Dessert in one of the Main Dining Rooms, there was 4 to choose from A fancy cocktail, which was actually really nice. The Fjords An unexpected, pretty cool thing we came across at one of the ports One of the Mission Impossible films were filmed there. The 1 where Tom Cruise jumps his bike off the mountain. The Fjords again Trolls everywhere The Grand Atrium inside the ship The Sky Dome (which was kiddy central, but it was still the 6 weeks holiday) And that's the lot, well, the ones I've picked to post here. I did actually take over 200 pictures of stuff. Fantastic holiday and we're now cruise-converts and will be doing one again.
