The heated windscreen on a volvo is just a marketing tool .

Back in 1969 MOTOR magazine did a test on luxury car heaters , The volvo 144 came out on top heating up to 38C in the cabin on an icy day , second was a mercedes at 28c if I remember correctly ... they had huge brass heater radiators in them and most importantly a 92C thermostat .
Not all P3 V70’s had the extra Ceramic heater. My 2013 petrol T6 did not. I did retro fit it off of a diesel car and reprogram the CEM for it to work. Mainly because i had access to the parts at very little cost. Not that it really needed it, as it warmed up fast anyway.

More on topic My present V90 T8 has an electric heated screen, as it came with one.
The wires are a bit annoying at times, but i have got used to them and had them on previous cars. I would probably chose a HUD if i was getting new, but the heated screen is useful, and is still faster than the fuel heater warming the car and screen, especially if driven in electric mode.
Yes I know about and do use the pre heat on the Volvo car app. When I remember.

My T8 does not have an electric heater, only the petrol one, and uses it even on preheating plugged in to the mains.
If i turn off the petrol heater the car does not give out heat.
Having done some research, it appears that if fitted with a fuel heater , the electric heater is not fitted.
Hopefully in the future the heated screens will be done with conductive film heaters, like planes have(Probably cost way to much), and really Volvo should offer both together.

Default Both.

I would have both. Other manufactures manage it. When I ordered mine and enquired about it, the dealers answer was that Volvo thought the heated screen would interfere with the HUD. This answer was from more than one dealer.

I was not impressed with Volvo on this point.

HUD answers a question I’d never bother asking, if I can’t get all the info needed from momentarily glancing at the dashboard it’s time to hand in the driving license.

It’s one of the reason I went for a used Inscription rather than Momentum Pro/ Inscription Pro, all of the ‘Pro’ when searching appeared to have the standard fit HUD rather than no cost heated screen.

HUD works well, no need to look away from road at all, absolutely zero need for a heated screen the entire time we've had the car. Not that we need the HUD either if I am honest but of the two it is something I'd actually use.

Maybe be because we can pre heat the car everything is all clear and toasty is the reason a heated screen has limited value.

This last few days, I've been to the "land that time forgot" and I deartly wish that I'd been in my V90 with HUD, rather than my wifes Kodiaq, so I could have easily tracked as the speed limits flicked from 20 to 30 to 40 to 30 to 20 to 30 to 20 etc etc for no discerenible reason. Speed limit signs obscured by foliage, vehicles, vandalism made driving in urban Wales an absolute PITA.

Never had a HUD until four years ago, always considered it a gimmick previously. Now I can’t live without it.

I have a heated screen and now I've had the car for a while, I realise it's not really needed, what with the pre-conditioning feature. It makes me wonder why the first owner specified it. As such, HUD might have been nice, but having never had one, I don't miss it.

On my current car the heated screen is a “gel” between the laminate. It works very well. No HUD available- but I don’t really miss it. Changing the subject slightly - I have double glazing / laminate all round. Certainly makes the car quiet.

Crockers - what did you decide in the end to replace your XC60 T5 - was it a Porsche?

As others have stated, what’s the point in having a heated screen when you can pre warm the car 10 mins before getting in. It’s useful on my wife’s Puma as that doesn’t have remote pre heat function.

HUD just makes driving that little bit easier/safer as no need to look down at the dials at all really
