I still keep coming back to the fact the car didn't start missing, stuttering before it stalled. Surely a lack of fuel pressure would show this type of Symtom?
I would have thought so. It sounds more like a blockage or a restriction. Check the filter to see what its like. Something as simple as a bad batch of fuel can cause problems. Or try putting a bottle of injector cleaner into the fuel. Dirty injectors can cause hesitations.

Air filter was clean, like new.

I have been using redex for the last 6 months. Probably should know better but the father in law got a massive box of bottles and gave me 4. Not sure if that could have caused issues

Hmm, its hard to say. I wouldn't use Redex frequently, regardless of what the bottle says. You only need a small amount to treat a full tank of fuel. I have used injector cleaner once or twice, followed the recommended dose and had no issues. Being honest, I didn't really think it made much of a difference, so I never bought it again. Some people swear by products like Redex, but I think its useless.

Regular servicing with the right spec oil, branded fuel, motorway trips to keep the DPF happy = no need for additives. Or, treat the car to a tank full of premium diesel every now and again. That works.

Yes I agree.

I only ever use esso (I have a fuel card with them)

I only use shell ultra oil

Possibly been doing smaller trips recently but nothing way out of the ordinary.

I don't want to dismiss it as an oddity because I don't want to be towing the caravan and this happen. It was actually quite dangerous when it occurred because the steering locked before I could fully get onto the curb side. Luckily it was a quiet road

From time to time I do use Redex and have not experienced any problems so doing. My XC70 is currently going like an express train but I can't say it's because of the Redex, but it might have cleaned the injectors and allowed the engine to produce more efficient running and power. Or maybe it's just a bottle of automotive placebo!

I use K.I.S.S. principles with maintenance generally. (Keep It Simple Stupid) - Look at the basic's first and get them checked/cleaned/confirmed operation before you start chasing things further down the line.

I would do/get the swirl flaps done first if they failed as previously mentioned as they will be crudded up no doubt and at the same time worth getting intake & egr system properly cleaned out..

Swirl flaps operate at low speeds and engine loads to aid power and combustion and are usually quite cruddy after a period of time.

That way you have a good datum to start from if further issues occur,

Hope that helps,

Thanks,

Andy
