The resurrection of my 244 turbo B21AT
Well the time has come, a little late perhaps but....
As some of you know I have a 244 DL with the benifit of a Volvo R Sport turbo kit, it was a kit available in the early 80's as a complete bolt on kit. Essentially it changed the designation of the engine from a B21A to a B21AT, mine also has the benifit of an intercooler together with a few other items My aim is to get in on the road for the Volvo owners club do in a month or so time, I dont know if it is possible but will try. The main jobs are a new head gasket and to sort the clutch out and then hopefully get a "test" on it I have started to remove the head this eve, looking for advice.... I don't know as yet what has failed, just the gasket or problems with the head too, I understand it has two gaskets between the block and the head, is this neccessary? ..............and would it be a good idea to a swap the head for another type, the one on the car is a standard one as found on the original B21A engine, is there another head that would offer a significant advantage on this turbo through a carb set up?? Thanks for your comments etc

Sorry I can't give you any advice regarding which head or if it should have two gaskets fitted.Maybe as the turbo was added the two gaskets lowered the compression to suit the turbo?
It would be nice to see it at the national and I wish you luck and much advice from others. Regards Brian. |

I belive some early engines could have two gaskets as a conversion to enable them to run on unleaded fuel
Would love to see the car, hope you make it |

Hi 244T what were the initial reasons for expecting a headgasket failure.
Was it boiling up and pressurising the expansion tank?or oil in the water? The headgasket normally fails in a certain place more often than not.I think I'm right in saying there is one waterway which is closer to the combustion chamber than the rest,Near the front end. Regards Brian. |

Two Gaskets
Had another look at things this morning, there are two gaskets!!
There was no oil / water contamination just once it warmed up it presurised the cooling water, taking it to the local machine shop today to see what they say about things. Any other comments are graetfully recieved. Thanks again.....

Interested in your turbo, are you using the Garrret T series and are you going to run the car with a carburrettor or fuel injection? What compression ratio do Volvo recommend with thier kit? I know I needed to put an extra head gasket on an old 245 to allow it to take unleaded, but that was nearly 20 years ago on an 83 Y reg car. BTW does your kit include the R sport boost guage with the R sport logo on? These are extremely rare (holy grail kind of thing). Good luck and let us see some photo's. Matt

More details
Well I took the head to the machine shop....He said it looked in good order but is going to pressure test it and see if it flags any problems up.
yes its a garret T3 if that means anything to you, I will try and find out the other info you asked about comp ratio but think that was the reason for two gaskets but I think looking at the notes I have with the car it hsa given problems in the ignition side of things in the past, he has tried all sorts of plugs etc. Yes its fitted with one of tha gauges you mention and it is using a carb. Thanks for your interest
