Default Gearbox oil cooler

HI ALL
i have changed the van and will be towing somewhere in the region of 96% not fully loaded,
with the old van that was 94% with no extra oil cooler fitted. what are the pros and cons on fitting the extra cooler now that i am higher with the weight, may i also point out that i had no issues when the old van was fully loaded with the gear box. your constructive comments as always will be appreciated and so will you sarcastic ones . the gear box is auto.

Smile Oil Cooler

Never had an oil cooler in 30 years of caravanning. It always amuses me that people say that cars get hotter when towing......... I'd never have guessed that...................!!

I think oil coolers are a bit outdated now, but no doubt your local dealership will 'convince' you that you will need one.

If the oil and filter are clean, and you don't hammer the car, then I don't reckon you'll have any problem.

My dad toasted the autobox on a Senator because he didn't fit an additional oil cooler - the box - asian copy of a borg-warner.

Now guess what gearbox they now make??

When I got the current V70 D5 AWD (2005) I contacted Volvo with caravan MPLM or whatever it's called and scope of operation, i.e. Europe, all seasons, and I have an e-mail from them saying no additional cooler was needed for the auto box.

Maybe with lock-up on auto-boxes now they do not get so hot as they did when torque convertor was always in slip?

you have an oil cooler as standard ! You will only need an additional one if doing heavy duty towing in hot climates .. ( UK at 30 C is a hot climate )

The cooling system on a volvo has ample reserves but i think what is more impoirtant is the quality of the oil , as long as it is clean and red i wouldnt worry too much but when it gets brown or yellow its boiling point will lower , when it boils thats when the problems start ..
