Default 1992 960 blink code 232

Hi, I have a UK 1992 Volvo 960, an orange arrow is blinking on the dash and the W/S/E is flashing on the auto gear shift console. The diagnostic blink code is 232 which according to Volvo UK code identification point to 1) wiring 2) speedometer or 3) vss / vehicle speed sensor. I have replaced the vss and now the fault is intermittent one day its ok the next the fault has returned. When the fault is present, the box goes into limp home mode and I lose the speedo and the box can’t decide which gear it wants to be in. One Suggestion is that maybe the speedo is at fault, but would this cause the symptoms above? And how do I check the speedo?
Could it be the tcm? Is there a way of testing any of these parts? And Where is the tcm? Any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions would be appreciated. Regards Marco.

Hi,

Sounds suspiciously like the PNP switch is going south.

You can try the quick fix of shifting the gear leaver through all positions (down to L and back up to P) about 20 - 30 times and that may get you sorted.

Otherwise you'll need a new PNP switch. £100 or there abouts from a Volvo dealer. Try Rufe on these forums for a good price. Don't get the scantech equivalent as it is not equivalent!!

Default blink code 232

Hi Des, thanks for your suggestions. Why do you think the PNP switch would knock out the speedo? Code 232 does not mention the PNP switch. I tried the car again this morning and the box does change up although sometimes it does get confused and is hunting for a gear. Also the speedo needle occasionally jumps up and down. Thanks for your time. marco

your auto is full electronic control, its linked through your speedo of course.. any form of electrical fault can cause undesired effects elsewhere. i will say though you should always check the earth points around the car and to the engine just in case. Des is likely to be on the money regarding the PNP switch its quite a common thing to need replacing. also you can get a fault with the mode selector.. i hear of them getting stuck in winter mode too because of the switch panel. but as i said check the wiring first, and at the pnp switch check the plug contacts corrosion is the killer.

Default Volvo or Scantech

If my experience is any thing to go by, the original PNP switch lasted 12 years and well over 100K. I used a Scantech PNP switch and it lasted 13 months and less than 10K. Volvo £105 .v. Scantech £58. No contest, the last two I have had done have been genuine Volvo.
