Angle gear 'fix' For AWD?

I am a proud owner of a 2000 XC70 AWD. There is a whine coming from the front of the car which I'm sure is coming from the Angle gear.
I've tried sourcing a replacement part but they seem to be rarer then Hen's teeth or ridiculously expensive £1200 new!
I've heard that if you remove the prop to the rear and make the vehicle a FWD this will sort the problem? I can't see why, as surely the gears are still being moved?
That being said, I'm not a mechanic! Does anybody have experience of this problem?

Just where the heck did you find one for only £1200!!?!?

£2k is lowest I ever seen. I'm on fwd only now
