v70 alternator
one of my Volvos is a 2001 2.4T V70 (95k) . Had it for 6 or 7 years now and never let me down till couple of months ago when the alternator died and it cut out on the motorway .
I sourced a second hand unit ( the delights of this recession nessecitated that ) and fitted it . That unit has now decided to put its feet in the air and die . Before I buy a new item . is there any "gizmo" which could have failed and is frying my alternator or am i just unlucky ? ( much prefer to work on my TR6 as everything is simple like me ) |

The most likely thing to fail is the voltage regulator , these have a single brush inside which wears down and the elctronics inside it can fail , you can get a regulator off ebay but these days a complete used alternator for a P2 V70 can be had for £25 if you have time to shop around . There are power diodes connected to the output leads of the stator windings , these are reliable on this particular alternator and less likely to fail but if they do fail a good diy repair would be difficult as they are welded in place , I dont think soldering would be reliable enough . You can test the diodes easily with a multimeter , have a look on wiki for how to .
