Unhappy V70 08 year Trip computer problem

I am new here and have a problem with my V70 trip computer. Don't know if this has been discussed previously. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
At first the trip computer occasionally would not show up when the knob was turned. Now the situation has evolved to an inability to reset the average speed and fuel consumption. I alerted the local Volvo dealer to the problem at last service. They stated that they could not detect the problem and dianostic indicated no fault (before the reset ceased up). Latest software was also uploaded without making any difference. I went back to the dealer yesterday and they now acknowledged the problem. Suggestion was remove the negative cable to the battery for two hours and replace while fob inserted. If that does not work they will try and replace the stick with one from another car. If that does not work either the whole dial assembly would have to be replaced. Mega bucks cost.
The dealer claims that my car is an isolated case and they have never heard about the problem before. I would like to know if the problem is more widespread and if anyone has a solution that works without emptying one's bank balance. I posted this in the 00-07 thread by mistake. Should be here.

Very strange. Never heard of that one. However, it sounds more likely that the switch is at fault physically, rather than this being a software issue I would have thought. Do you have a warranty with the vehicle?
