S80: Engine - Engine noise

Hi all,

I've now owned my 2010 S80 2.4D auto for just over a year. Overall, I really like the car. I bought it because I fancied something big, comfortable and automatic and it fits the bill on all counts. The one complaint I have is engine noise. Cruising along the motorway at 70 it's hardly noticeable. However it is very noticeable driving around town. I thought I'd eventually get used to it but so far I haven't. The S80 is my first diesel and first auto so perhaps I'm expecting too much?

Reading some reviews, engine noise is picked up in some but not others. I'd be interested to know other peoples experiences. Are they all like this or could mine perhaps be particularly noisy?

Hi, I have 2007 s80 D5 and find that driving it slowly ie 20 -30mph through residential areas it sounds like a bag of *****, especially if you have the window down, but, and its a big but, when you drive it hard it sounds lovely, so there's your solution. Seriously though, when I use a higher grade of diesel, shell's v-power or BP's Ultimate, it does seem to be quieter than normal.

Thanks for the info Joe. I've not tried anything other than Tesco value diesel, so will give it a go.
