Knocking Noise Passenger Side Rear
Hi All,
I've had an intermittent knocking sound on the passenger side rear of my 2005 V70 for a while, but over the last few days it has got worse. It can happen when I go over a speed bump, when cornering left but also sometimes when going over a small bump in the road. It sounds a bit like metal on metal. I've been reading loads of threads on this and other forums but can't seem to get any definitive answer. The car is a 2005 model but only has 37k on the clock with a full Volvo dealer service history. The previous owner got any work that was needed done so I would be surprised if it was anything major failing. It sailed through the last MOT with no advisories so can probably rule out quite a lot there. Any suggestions? I'd really love to be able to narrow it down so if I need to take it to a garage, they don't need to spend too much time (or my money!) fault finding. Thanks all. Edit: Could the anti roll bar drop links make this sort of noise if they are worn out? Last edited by NullaDave; Jun 7th, 2021 at 14:20. |

Easy enough to check them too. If they're badly worn, you'll be able to shake them by hand. Check the rubber boots for splits, as they need replacing if the boots are split & there's no movement anyway.

I located my drop link issue by getting someone to rock the car side to side and identify the clonky part visually and audibly by laying on the floor and looking underneath
+1 for the roof rails which provide a very convenient handle for aforementioned rocking Don't have your head so far under there that the sill squishes you, it might be a close fit Other causes of knocks from rear include obviously bushes but less obviously the internal parts of the handbrake which are not possible to identify visually Im assuming you'd have noticed already but I suppose it's also possible the handbrake cable has come free and flapping about but that would probably be a pretty much constant noise Last edited by stuart bowes; Jun 7th, 2021 at 19:45. |

I'been having the same irritating knocks from left rear for awhile on the 2005 facelift XC70 D5 w 201K - replaced the drop links - no difference. Gonna get it in at the independent for a thorough check - hoping it's a spring and not the Nivomat shock. Could also be the rear stay control bushes I suppose. Anything is better than the shocks at £400 a pop. The car is sitting at the right height and responds normally when you jump on the bumper so probably not the Nivomat. Still, irritating as heck.
