Default Rustoleum matt black tractor paint

I'm turning my attention to Cinders ( 744 with B230E engine ). It's silver, but the bonnet is relativeluy rust free, but with badly sun damaged paint on the bonnet. I'm going to move the alloy wheels onto the estate, and replace them with steel wheels. I'm thinking of painting the bonnet and wheels with matt black Rustoleum tractor paint. What do you guys think of this idea? Does it give good protection against rust?

If your a young retro lad by all means but the general concenus here is keep the cars original .
Have the paint work bonnet ect done by a good recommended paint shop in original colours now .and you won't need to paint it again o and some TLC wax or similar every now and then .
Only my personal opinion!

Rust has to be treated at the bare metal stage to be effective:~
Many surface treatments are just that- masking the problem whilst the rust continues to fester.

A personal choice, but staying original & doing it properly will produce dividends in a number of ways: particularly if the car moves to another owner.
Good Luck.
Bob.

The secret to keeping a professional paint job reasonably priced is to go somewhere that has a scanner exactly to match the adjacent paintwork and just paint the panel that needs it rather than feather the new paint into the adjacent panels.

I think it rather depends upon what one is looking for. If it is a full, no expense spared, restoration to original condition, then of course go for the professional paint job. If, on the other hand, as I suspect, it is to maintain a working vehicle in good reliable order, then that may be viewed as unnecessary expense and a more economical solution sought.

I have no experience of the tractor paint to which 'Offgrid' refers, so an unable to comment on it's suitability for his intended application, but I have had good results using Hammerite products on my cars for many years.

If it does the job and you are not too worried about appearances, what is there not to like? Almost any paintwork on my V70 would almost certainly cost more than what I paid for the car almost eight years ago!

Regards, John.

I like it.

There is a guy on youtube called Derek that uses this same exact paint a lot of times. His channel is called Vice Grip Garage and he also has a show on Motor Trend called RoadWorthy Rescues that is the same exact concept of the youtube channel. He rescues cars, doesn't fully restore them, just brings them to roadworthy condition.

Anyways, here's an example of him painting an old chevy truck with it. He talks about the paint at 8:20. It's the same exact paint OffGrid is mentioning, for anyone who isn't familiar with it.

EDIT: and I don't see why it wouldn't offer good rust protection. It's a heavy duty single stage paint. If anything, probably rust protection is its main duty/purpose.

Not something I would do myself, but each to their own.

Could you not find a better condition bonnet to swap over?

It's gonna look like ****, bro. But yes, it should slow the rust down.

Default Cinders the Volvo 740 saloon

Here is a picture of Cinders - called Cinderella because she has dirty clothes but a great heart.

She now has alloy wheels, but those will be moved onto the estate as soon as I have cleaned them. I bought the car for less than the scrap value. It came from a friend of a friend, who is a massive Volvo fan. He had just spent £500+ on the car, and it was still running roughly, so he gave up on her, and bought a 940. It turned out that the service mechanic had fitted new plugs, but had not checked the gaps. They were 0.2 too wide, and that was an easy fix. It also needed a new fuel pump relay - another cheap fix. The guy is a smoker, and had used the vehicle as a work van, so I junked the rear seats. The door cards are broken and ripped, and the roof lining is missing. The dash under the windscreen is sun cracked. The sun roof leaked ( now fixed ) There are a lot of rust spots on the body which have been "repaired" with heavy packing tape. The rear window is cracked. There are some other problems, but I'm getting bored with listing them.

It wouid be a massive job to bring it anywhere close to original condition, especially as it has a replacement engine taken from a 240. Despite all of the above, I think it is a great car, and I love it - it just needs some ( well a lot of ) tlc. My plan is to use it as a daily driver, and an experimental car. The experiment is for me to learn about Volvo reblocks. You will see that the image is hosted on Save Old Cars and this is another project of mine. I belive that the purchase of new cars ( not just electric) is damaging for the planet, and we should do more to encourage the preservation of good reliable old cars.

That’s awesome. Do you what you want with it. As you say, it’s not viable to save them all so just have fun with it.
